What is naturopathy?

Naturopathy is a form of medicine practiced widely throughout the world. It is basically concerned with discovering and removing the cause of disease. A naturopaths’ aim is to assist you in obtaining optimal health by focusing on the cause of your ailment as well as addressing the symptoms that are troubling you. Your treatment program is designed just for YOU, helping to bring your health back in balance. .

People are becoming more and more disenchanted with conventional, pharmaceutical medication and are wanting to take more responsibility for their own health. They are beginning to realise that it is better to prevent disease with a healthy approach to life rather than to wait until a disease manifests and take hard medication to “patch up” the presenting symptoms.

Naturopaths work on the principle that disease is a manifestation of an imbalance or deficiency in the body and the primary aim of treatment is to correct this imbalance, bringing the whole body back into harmony, supporting the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

Going to a naturopath is much like going to a doctor although the consultation is usually longer as a much more detailed history is taken. Treatment programes may include diet and lifestyle changes, herbal medicine, nutritional supplements, flower remedies, massage and homoeopathy. The treatment will be specifically designed to suit YOU as an individual, not simply a symptom that happens to be presenting.

A naturopath’s role as an educator is of essential importance. They give advice on how to make changes to the diet and lifestyle in order to restore health, being sure to explain to the patient the reason why the current diet and lifestyle have contributed to their current symptoms and why these changes will improve health.

Naturopathic medicine makes sense. It uses the most non-toxic, natural and least invasive treatment available. It takes into consideration the person as a whole, using the healing power of nature.
